Singing workshops

We run singing workshops for women experiencing mental health difficulties, designed to build confidence and self-esteem as well as to introduce people to singing together in harmony.

Thursdays 1:30 – 3:30

20th Oct – 8th Dec

At Burngreave Vestry Hall, 2 Burngreave Road, S3 9DD

The group will run for 8 weeks and focus on the positive mental health benefits of singing together.

We would love to hear from you if you are interested and would like more information. Phone Helen (274 3651) or Kate (242 5565). Please leave a message and we'll get back to you.

This project is being organised in partnership with SAGE Greenfingers, with the support of the People’s Postcode Trust.

What to expect

We begin with group-building activities and move on to singing warm-ups, including physical relaxation, breathing and gentle vocal exercises. Then we learn simple songs in parts. As part of this process, we encourage sharing and discussion, so people get the chance to part of a group and widen their social networks.

Recently we brought a new element into the workshops: a weekly Desert Island Disc slot where we asked people to bring along a favourite song to play and talk about. This idea was taken up with enthusiasm. It gave people a chance to share something about the significance of music in their lives. At the end, we gave people a recording of the songs we had sung together so everyone would remember what they had learned. Participants even gave a performance at SAGE Greenfingers open day.

Singing at our open day

As you can see from the feedback below, this project is hugely beneficial to its participants:

“It is a step back into a normal life after 3 years of suffering from anxiety and depression. It is good to be in a group where there is understanding and acceptance of mental health issues.”

“A lot of friendship.”

“More confidence to give things a try.”

“Elated, uplifted by the singing, the harmony, the whole dynamic of being in a group and singing together.”

“Reminded me of the benefits of breathing deeply to help with anxiety.”

“I don’t stammer when I’m singing.”

“It makes me feel special.”

“When we arrived we were complete strangers. Within a short time we have become friends.”
